Occupational Therapy

occupational Therapy, Behaviour Matters

Occupational therapists are health professionals who aim to help people learn new skills and gain greater independence in activities of daily living. For children, this means helping them with learning the skills they need to be able to perform activities such as socializing with their friends, getting dressed by themselves, focusing in school and writing their names. Occupational therapists can help children and families accomplish their goals by evaluating the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical issues that affect the child’s ability to engage in self-care, play and school activities. Based on the identified needs and strengths of the children, occupational therapists can develop individualized interventions for children to help them reach their goals.

Occupational therapists can help with:

Fine Motor Skills: handwriting, grasping, using buttons and zippers, and playing with toys.

Gross Motor Skills: sitting/standing balance, delays in reaching developmental milestones, and catching a ball.

Cognitive Skills: problem-solving, setting goals, planning, scheduling, memory, and attention.

Social and Emotional Skills: emotional and behavioural regulation, recognizing their own feelings, playing with others, making social connections, managing stress and coping with transitions.

Self-Help Skills: Dressing, bathing, toileting, and grooming.

To help your child reach their goals, occupational therapists may teach strategies for skill development, recommend functional practice and exercise activities, use social stories, recommend environmental adaptations, develop sensory regulation strategies, provide adaptive equipment recommendations and develop creative compensatory solutions.
